Homelessness

For the past few years, I have noticed more and more homeless people on the streets where I work. I have seen many who appear to struggle with either drug addiction or psychological issues. There are those who walk around half-naked, talking to themselves, and there are those who are laid out on the ground, passed out or sleeping. I have witnessed a couple copulating on the grassy area next to a gas station. I have watched grown men walk down the streets naked in a confused state. It is very sad what has happened to these people. What can we do?

Just the other day, I met a homeless gentleman where I worked. He came to the agency where I work to do something for himself. Unfortunately, he smelled like he hadn't bathed in days, which made it difficult to work with him. Nonetheless, I tried to treat him as any other person we serve. After all, he is a human being. Who doesn't deserve a second chance?

During one of my breaks, an interesting question came to mind: Why aren't there any public showers for the homeless? We have done so much to make sure people don't get sick from Covid-19. Why aren't we trying to help those who are likely to be diseased from uncleanliness? I'm certain there are organizations and shelters out there that provide services, but wouldn't it be helpful if such a service was closer to those who needed it? Perhaps, it all comes back to a lack of funding. I don't know.

I will say that I have grown tired of seeing people eat out of the trashcan to the point I will offer what I have on hand. I know I can't support that person, but I can help that individual obtain something more wholesome to eat. Would any of us want our family or loved ones eating out of a trash can? Could we stand to see others not help those whom we love? Is it really that difficult to share, if but a little?

It has taken me many encounters to come to my beliefs and values on who and what a human being is. I do not believe we are mere animals that feed off the waste of others. Each of us has potential to be something greater. It can be difficult at times to see that, especially when all we see is what is in front of us. The horrendous odor that the individual gives off may even repel us from that vision. It's not easy. I know. But if we don't try, who will?

Safety above all else, but when an opportunity presents itself, we should seize it. You never know what good can come of it.
